In 2002, Kathleen was commissioned to complete two projects
for the new SBC Spurs Arena designed by Lake Flato Architects.
The first project was a series of five window panels, each one
about 16 feet high and 5 to 6 feet wide, depicting the four
seasons and celebrations of San Antonio. They were cut two at
a time, by hand, from heavy duty plastic vinyl. The second
project was a series of ten different papel picado banners. |

Stage Drop
|
In 1999, Kathleen designed a papel picado inspired stage
backdrop for the opening celebration of a new bridge connecting
Eagle Pass, Texas, with Piedras Negras, Mexico.
For the center panel and focal point, Trenchard used images
of a rising sun and river flowing through cultivated fields
beneath the new bridge. This banner was surrounded by banners
using a vine and fruit theme symbolizing the shared lifestyles
on both sides of the border. The colorful designs were blown up
and printed on nylon. The rising sun design was reproduced on
brochures, hand fans, program covers and stationary.
The large version in nylon was later installed in the Eagle Pass
City Hall. Dignitaries received souvenirs in the form of a
framed papel picado version of the central banner cut in
various bright colored papers by Kathleen. |
