I've been a teacher or librarian most of my working life and have pursued jobs all over the world---Poland, Yugoslavia, India, Pakistan, Finland, Indonesia and the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. I've also been a collector all my life----- of folk art, for the most part, for the last 30 years. When I came to Poland many years ago, among other things, I became interested in Polish folk art, especially wycinanki, or papercutting.

I decided to take early retirement in 1998, so I could devote myself to writing for children, but instead, after making a papercutting for some friends who were leaving Poland for good, my life took another track, and I have been passionately snipping paper ever since.

I can cut traditional Polish style papercuttings, and my first work often was in that style or used Polish themes. I still do that, but my work has broadened to include many themes and methods. I usually use a pair of small, sharp scissors and cut from black paper, but I also decorate white papercuts with colored pencils or watercolors, paint the backgrounds with watercolors or colored inks and used colored bits of paper both behind and on top of the cuttings.

My favorite themes are cats (I have four at home who usually accompany my cutting), birds, trees and flowers and subjects like Noah's Ark, the four seasons, folk tales, etc.

I've had exhibitions in Poland, the U.S. and Holland. I belong to the Guild of American Papercutters and the German Guild and write articles about Polish wycinanki for both their journals. Besides making many original papercuttings, I've used my papercutting designs to make cards, a birthday calendar, t-shirts, magnets and book marks. My goal is still to write books for children, but now I want to illustrate them with my papercuttings. You can see examples of my work on my own website which is www.papercuttings.waw.pl.
