I’m Gerlof Smit and live and work in the Netherlands. I work as a freelancer for large companies where I create concepts and designs, but sometimes I also cut paper with scissors. There’s no distinction between work and hobby in that for me. I do them one after the other and also at the same time. And I enjoy doing both just as much. It means creating things all day long. Sometimes I do them in the computer.

Sometimes I work with scissors.I’ve been working with scissors since I could hold them in my hands. In other words, I started at a really young age. When you start to see results, you begin to enjoy doing it. And if you like doing it, you do it more often, and when you do if more often you get better at it. Then one day, it’s the way you do things. If you work a lot with silhouettes, you look at the world in a particular way, and suddenly you see everything around you in terms of silhouettes.

Trees, cows, buildings and of course people too. I see them all as silhouettes. Landscapes too. I made many during my annual trips through your beautiful country, the United States. In addition to creating a beautiful setting, I think a lot about the paper itself too, the structure and the weight of the paper, and I’m always curious what else can be done with it. On my site, www.gerlofsmit.com, you can see what I mean by clicking on “Paper”.

There were a few periods in my life when I did not make cut-outs for some years. I was busy with other, also nice, things. And then something happens that gets you right into it again. Now my head is full of ideas again for things I want to make, and I’m as eager as ever. But now I want to do something larger, more expressive and use more color. By having published four art newspapers, I managed to combine the two things I’ve always done, design and cut-outs.
