In 1978 I started designing original papercuttings,
called scherenschnitte by the Pennsylvania Dutch.
My cuttings were based on the Swiss/German technique
of cutting one piece of paper in a continuous design.
|
The first cuttings were inspired by the works of the
Pennsylvania Germans from the eighteen hundreds.
I designed and cut house blessings (Hassegan),
birth certificates (Trufschein), and other pictures
using traditional Pennsylvania motifs.

Currently my
selections have expanded to include nature, family
trees and biblical pictures. Calligraphy adds another
dimension to the designs. Often I am commissioned to
make personalized cuttings with the subject matter
being selected by the customer.
|
My training as an art teacher at Kutztown University
with an M.S. in Art Education has had a positive
influence on my creations. Serious papercutting after
the birth of my two children. At present, I work out
of a studio in Stony Creek Mills, PA, where my husband,
Gerry, custom frames the cuttings.
|
I am a juried member
of the Reading Berks Guild of Craftsmen, the Pennsylvania
Guild of Craftsmen and a founding member of GAP. It is
a joy to know my cuttings are found in homes from
California to Maine and Europe. I hope that all who see
my work will appreciate the resurgence of this art form.
