Gudi Gilbert
|
I was born in Mainz, Germany known for its inventor in 1468 of the
printing press, Johann Gutenberg.
|
I attended a convent school in Germany (“The English Ladies” or in
German “Die Englischen Fraeulein”), which was founded by Maria Ward
of England in 1748.

There I learned the art of silhouette cutting or paper cutting,
and was fascinated from day one about what one can do with a pair
of scissors and a piece of black paper.
|
I developed a passion for this art form called “Scherenschnitt”
in German. My favorite subjects are fairy lands, nature, animals,
birds and flowers. You name it, everything can be cut.

Since this is an ancient and almost lost art, I am trying to keep
it alive.
|
In 1973 1 came to America and lived for some year in the upper part
of Michigan. Around the country numerous galleries and museums
exhibited my work.

I also was featured on TV specials and was interviewed about the art
of paper or silhouette cutting. In addition, my art was highlighted
in newspaper and magazine articles.
|
I especially enjoy and find it fascinating and challenging when people
ask me to design their own ideas for wedding invitations, birth
announcements, retirements and anniversaries.
